Cape Coral and Board and Train Stays: Notes for Canal Dogs.

Cape Coral is a huge peninsula city with more canals than almost any other place on Earth, and a dog that lives here is never far from open water.

Wikipedia counts over 400 miles of canals and waterways in the city, so many yards end at a seawall or a dock. A dog that bolts after a bird or a splash can end up in the water, and getting out of a seawalled canal is hard. Tell any trainer about your waterfront early, and ask how they teach a dog to hold still at an open edge and come when called from a distance.

The city has the largest population of burrowing owls in Florida, according to its Wikipedia page, and the small owls nest in marked holes on empty lots. A dog that digs or lunges at them is a problem for the birds and for you, so ask about leave-it practice and keep dogs on a leash near any marked burrow.

Cape Coral Parkway, Del Prado Boulevard and Veterans Parkway are wide and fast, and many neighborhoods have long straight sidewalks with little shade. Plan walks for early morning or evening, and ask a trainer how they build stamina in heat. Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve and the city parks are useful for practice, though rules vary, so read the signs.

Because the city is so spread out, a trainer may be a long drive away. Ask about pickup, drop-off and travel fees for follow-up visits, and plan the handoff with the drive in mind. A stay around $1,500 to $2,500 or more is the general estimate, as a planning figure only.

Before you decide. Three checks.

  1. List the habits in Cape Coral you most want changed, such as the doorbell, the leash or the lanai gate.
  2. Ask any trainer how storm days work and whether dogs from Lee County are accepted.
  3. Plan the first week home: quiet days, short outings near Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve and the canal-lined residential blocks and the same cues the trainer taught.

Good questions

Before you begin.

Does living on a canal change my questions?

Yes. Ask about recall near water, door and gate manners and how dogs are kept safe around docks.

What about burrowing owls?

Keep dogs on a leash near marked burrows and ask about leave-it practice.

How far will I have to drive?

This site cannot say where trainers will be. Ask about pickup options and any travel fees.

Is shade a problem on city sidewalks?

Often, yes. Early and late walks are safer, and a trainer should plan around the hot hours.
